Cultivating Mindfulness
Lent, the 40 days of preparation leading to Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, is a time for us to pay intentional attention to those practices in our lives that open the way for Christ’s leading. By mindful reflection, we become more aware of those habits, both positive and negative, through which we carry out our lives.
These devotions have been written by American University students and members of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church Cooperative parish, which also includes the congregations at Crossroads and Wesley UMC. The topic of our devotional is mindfulness—awareness, full presence, attentiveness to the presence of God. The devotions have a wide range of perspectives and ways of tackling the topic of mindfulness.
We invite you to read along each week as part of your Lenten practice this year. We also still need devotionals for the last part of Lent, so please share your inspiration with the community. It can be a short reflection, prayer or song on mindfulness, being aware, or paying attention to the presence of God. If possible, keep it to 300 words or less and send to hosey@aumethodists.org for future weekly installments of the Lenten Devotional.
We thank all the writers for making this a special time of fellowship between our congregations and the AU community. In addition to the printed version of the devotional, weinvite you to share our devotional widely through our blog, http://lentendevotional.wordpress.com. You can sign up to get entries sent to you via email or visit and read entries as you wish during Lent.
Blessings this Lent,
